What You Need to Know Before Your First Class

If you're new to Pilates you might have a few questions! Here are a few tips to get you started!

Don't Eat Right Before Your Class!

Because Pilates works your abdominals so much it's best to start your workout on an empty stomach. If you must eat - keep it light, such as a banana, yogurt or a handful of nuts.

Wear Form Fitting Clothes

If you're going to a studio or gym for your class it really helps the instructor if they can see your body! Pilates is very focused on alignment and posture so if your instructor can't see your body they won't be able to offer adjustments and modifications.

Breathe!

Most Pilates exercises follow a particular breath pattern. When I see new people in class I always tell them - don't worry about whether you should be breathing in or out - just breathe! There can be a lot to take in in your first few sessions and clients often get worried they're not breathing in the right place. It's fine! Just keep breathing!!

What Do I Need to Bring?

Just a mat, water bottle and great attitude! In some classes I do use small props but will either have these available (at an in person class) or will let you know where to purchase from.

Pilates is Not a Quick Fix!

Joseph Pilates famously said "In 10 sessions you'll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you'll see the difference. And in 30 sessions you'll have a whole new body."

It's true - you will most likely feel different before you look different. You will feel taller and hold yourself better (which in itself makes you look better!), you will be more confident and maybe even happier but your body might not look different. But over time Pilates will lengthen and tone your muscles giving you a more sculpted look.

Quality Not Quantity

Most Pilates exercises are only performed for 8-10 reps. This is because we focus on quality of movement not quantity! One of the core principles of Pilates is Precision. We are aiming to move our bodies in the most efficient way possible - getting maximum output by being mindful of what we are doing.

Pilates is for Everyone!

Pilates has over 500 exercises with modifications for all levels - you can make it easier or more challenging! You don't need to be fit already, or a certain weight or be injury free before you start. Just make sure to make your instructor aware of any concerns you may have and always get your doctors go ahead before starting any new exercise program!
